Abraham Lincoln
James A. Garfield
William McKinley
John F. Kennedy
Four U.S. Presidents have been assassinated while in office. Abraham Lincoln was the first, shot by John Wilkes Booth in 1865 during a play at Ford’s Theatre. James A. Garfield was fatally shot in 1881 by Charles Guiteau, a disgruntled office seeker. William McKinley was killed in 1901 by anarchist Leon Czolgosz while attending the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. The most recent was John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963 in Dallas, Texas, by Lee Harvey Oswald. Each assassination had a profound impact on the nation and led to increased security measures for future presidents.
